Character Information

Personality

Introvert | Daydreamer | Rational | Opinionated | Devoted | Stubborn | Judgmental | Distant | Curious

[Introverted]

“…”

From the beginning, Akira was actually quite the energetic foal, full of spirit, and when it came to other horses besides her mother, she was timid at first but curiosity would draw her out, as she was also eager to find new friends.  Constantly on the move, seeing as she and her mother were loners, she wasn’t exposed to many others of her kind, thus leaving her with somewhat of a lack of social skills and some desperation for a playmate.  As she grew older, her father began to show through in her and she developed a very stubborn, persistent streak, which unfortunately only added to her awkward nature.  After her tragic mother’s death, something snapped in the young mare and she clammed up, preferring to be alone rather than in the company of other equines beside her adopted sister, Aralynne.  Upon first meetings, she often is not the one to start a conversation, though with some determination and kindness, you can draw her out of her shell.  Close friends are able to see a rare, jovial and even playful side to her, because deep down, she still is that young, lonely filly who just wanted to connect; to have friends.

[Daydreamer]

“…Hm?  Were you saying something?”

Growing up with so much time to herself, Akira became quite the daydreamer.  Her mother often found her staring up at the sky or out into the horizon for long periods of time, just thinking; imagining how it might be to live without fear of the bachelors or recapture…how it might feel to belong to a herd, a family.  To this day, she can still be found lost in thought, gazing out over the plains.

[Calculative/Rational]

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you to think before you act?”

Akira’s process of thinking tends to be very logical, she being the type to think before leaping.  She knows her strengths and her weaknesses, and tries to use them strategically in the best way possible.  She’d rather take things slow and steady than to rapidly plunge into them headfirst.  However, there is an exception to this when it comes to the Bachelor herd (*see Opinionated and Judgemental).

[Opinionated]

“You won’t change my mind.”

Akira may be quiet, but that doesn’t stop her from developing her own thoughts.  Her body language often says more than her words, as it portrays her strong opinions within.  She almost always has a firm belief about nearly any topic, which is seen in her actions and frequent snarky comments.  However, there is one exception to her usual quietness, which would be the Bachelors.  Caught between terror of and fury towards the unruly herd, she has a tendency to bypass her usual rational analysis and lash out without forethought, which is frequently the cause of trouble she finds herself stuck in.

[Devoted/Determined]

“Nothing will stand in my way.”

Devotion and determination is what keeps Akira moving forward, even after the tragic story of her past.  Though her mother is no longer with her, her memory is the driving force that keeps Akira continuing to put one hoof in front of the other.  Never knowing her sire, her dam was the only blood family member in Akira’s life; and thus, a fervent bond was woven between them, never to be broken even by death itself.  As passionate and devoted to her mother as Akira is, if any stallion could manage to draw out the frail, timid mare from behind such a hard, protective shell, a new bond, though challenging to form at first, could grow into a deep connection that Akira has been unconsciously seeking for so long…

[Stubborn]

“Your efforts to deter me make me laugh.”

Despite the fear and strong sense of freedom that drives her onward, keeping her from settling in one place, Akira can definitely be known as stubborn.  She generally has one plan and one plan only, and with that mentality, there aren’t many who can get her to change her mind.  However, with enough effort and determination, you can at least possibly get the idea into her head, and once there, she’ll take it into consideration.  It’s just getting to that point that’s the most difficult.

[Judgmental/Bias]

“You’re one of them aren’t you….”

Because of her troubled history, Akira has difficulty accepting any stallion from the Bachelor herd, even some of the mares as well.  She’s quick to plaster a bad name on a Bachelor stallion and often remains cold to stallions in general.  Honestly all she ever heard of stallions were those of the Bachelor herd; and thus, the two terms started to become synonymous in her eyes.  Especially as a loner, she’d rather be safe than sorry, no matter if the male seems docile or not.

[Distant/Reclusive]

“I’m better off alone…”

Deriving from her innate timidity, Akira is reluctant to grow close to any other equine after her mother died.  The death of her dam tore her apart on the inside…and she isn’t sure she could go through that again.  If it hadn’t been for Aralynne, she honestly doesn’t know what she would have done.  Where she would have gone…  And even now…her beloved adopted sister was gone too.  She’s constantly caught between wanting to reach out and fear of pain or rejection; and the majority of the time, her fear wins the battle.  Thus, though she may seem friendly at times, you often feel that she’s holding you at arm’s length, never allowing you to see what’s really behind those deep chocolate brown eyes, only giving you glimpses of the turmoil of emotions raging deep within...

[Curious]

“I wonder what they’re up to…”

While Akira is intelligent, often knowing what to do and how to react in a certain situation, she has an intense, frustratingly resilient curiosity streak that continually pesters the logical side of her brain.  For example, even though she has a strong distaste for Bachelor stallions, she can’t help being equally curious about them.  Allegedly, stallions are supposed to be dependable, valiant leaders, so then why is the Bachelor herd so violent and hostile?  A display of strength?  Selfishness perhaps?  This inquisitiveness tends to draw her to watching the herd hidden from afar and to often raiding their current camp, making off with their jewels and other precious objects just to annoy them.  Though it’s probably the most dangerous opposite of the thing she should be doing, which is keeping miles away from even their lookouts.  Overall, her curiosity almost always tends to cause negative consequences…it did kill the cat, didn’t it?

Pre-History

Akira’s tale began long before her birth, way back to the young teenage years of her dam, Meira.  You see, in order to really know Akira’s story, you must first understand how it came to be.  To do this, we must return to nearly two decades earlier…

Now Meira was a calm, elegant young mare, born into the grace of the Olde herd and surrounded by loved ones.  Her sire was a respected advisor and her dam was well known around the herd, as she made it her business to attend to the social needs of the herd:  helping prepare for festivals, supporting pregnant mares, organizing weddings, and the like.  Meira, who was eighteen at the time and only a mere month away from adulthood, was expected to become like her parents – a respected member of the herd and a perfect lady – and for the most part, that’s what she strove to do.  Of course she was curious about the land bridges, but it was forbidden, and so she did her best to ignore the gnawing prospect of what was beyond the expanse of water surrounding their island.  One night, however, she was persuaded by a dashing young stallion to go gallivanting across the plains with him; the night of the Solstice…  Before they knew what they were doing, they had ventured dangerously close to the entrance of the forbidden land bridge, coming only several feet away from the passage.  It was then that they caught sight of them…the Bachelor herd.  Meira had heard the stories of the stallions who crossed the bridge to raid the Olde herd for mares, but honestly she’d never really believed it.  She just thought it was a story they told the foals in order to keep them away from the passageway.  Flying back to the herd as fast as her hooves could carry her, she tried to warn them of the danger that was coming, but the raiders were already right on the two juveniles’ tails and stormed the herd before Meira had the chance to alert the elders.

This had been a dark night for the poor mare…There had just been so much squealing and yelling.  The ground had thundered with the pounding of hundreds of hooves.  It had been so dark and all Meira could make out within the disorientation was the occasional body slamming into hers and sharp nips at her heels.  The Olde guards and stallions defended their family courageously and eventually drove out the Bachelor invaders; however, not without losses…  Meira and her mother were taken.  The grief and guilt that he was not able to protect his family ate Meira’s father away on the inside, and eventually he resigned from his council position, not seeing himself fit to be an advisor.  As for Meira, the sheer fear and confusion was almost indescribable for the young mare.  One step out of line and a painful snap was delivered on her flank by one of the stallions to force her in the right direction as she and the rest of the captured mares were herded across the Eastern lands.  Meira had been a prime target for the raiders due to being the perfect age, not too young but just barely reaching adulthood so that she would be able to be of good use to them.  It was the first time Meira had ever experienced being treated like property…  Not to mention her silver dapple coloring drew the eye of many a stallion, several of the brutes making crude passes at her before they’d even made it back to the Bachelor herd.  From that day on, Meira’s life would be very different…

It was more than challenging to become accustomed to the Bachelor herd’s rough customs, even more so because she was a mare.  Here, mares were treated like pets, objects to be ogled and used to the stallion’s benefit.  Not long after Meira and her dam had been forced into the new herd, Meira’s mother began showing signs of pregnancy.  No bachelor stallion had yet mounted her, so it must have been Meira’s own full-blooded sibling, sired by her father.  Meira constantly stayed glued to her mother’s side throughout the pregnancy, not being able to imagine what her mother must have been going through…how much she must have missed Meira’s father…  However, she never could have imagined what came when the foal was born.  It was a colt, a gangly little thing that looked quite small and thin, even for a newborn.  As soon as Meira’s dam recovered from labor, because the sire was not a member of the herd, the Bachelor leader himself took it upon him to maul the foal’s face with the traditional X of the Bachelor herd.  He explained it as a test to prove if the foal was fit to be a Bachelor stallion.  Meira called it murder.  The colt was just too frail and passed away later that night from the trauma…  Meira and her dam, hearts broken, mourned the life that was snuffed out that day.  Meira’s mother changed ever since that night.  She became a shell of her former self, withdrawing from the world due to grief and despair.  When it came time for Meira to be mounted the first time by a Bachelor stallion, she knew, in that instant, that she could not allow her foal, her own precious baby, to suffer the same fate.  Even if the impregnation was unsuccessful, she needed to escape.  She would not take any chances.

Carefully planning out her flight, she made note of which guard was to take watch of her group that night and studied his habits, searching for any weaknesses obscured by his rough exterior.  Back in the Olde herd, she had learned a bit about certain herbs and plants that had certain properties, usually used in the healing of an injured member.  From the moment she’d gotten to the herd, she’d noticed a patch of herbs on the edge of the herd’s land known to cause drowsiness and relaxation.  Formulating a plan in her mind, she waited until darkness had fallen and most of the other mares had gone to sleep.  Giving a quick nip to the haunches of another mare, she quickly succeeded in causing a disturbance with the moody brood.  Sure enough, just as she’d hoped, the guard on watch ambled over to break up the petty fight between the broods.  After he’d settled the matter, Meira caught his attention with mock seduction, leading him over towards the patch of herbs.  Then, striking the plants with her back hooves, she flung them up into the guard’s face, tearing the weeds open as she did so.  Consequently, the fumes of the plants were released and inhaled by the flustered stallion.  Immediately, she took off into the night as fast as her nimble legs could carry her, very quickly pursued by the infuriated guard.  Being a cross of Akhal-Teke and Holsteiner gave the mare an anatomical structure for speed and agility, which made it difficult for the disoriented guard to keep up.  As she headed for the dense forest nearby, the guard smirked, knowing that the main path into the brush was blocked by an immense spruce tree that had rotted and fallen during a recent storm.  However, Meira leapt off the ground with amazing height and as the guard watched with eyes wide and mouth agape, she flew clean over the trunk, disappearing into the inky darkness of the forest.

Meira originally intended to return to her herd on the Olde Isle, but very early on in the journey, she found it became increasingly difficult to travel as, indeed, she had become pregnant.  Thus, she decided to remain in the area she’d reached and stay hidden.  She’d made quite the distance between herself and the Bachelor herd and at that time, she just needed to focus on keeping herself and her foal safe.  And that is where she stayed, as far away from the Bachelors as possible until finally her filly was born…her little Akira.

Foal-Hood (0-12 Years)

Now do you see?  Akira’s story wouldn’t have made very much sense now, would it?  At last, we can come to the birth of the shy, buckskin filly, Meira’s pride and joy.  Even though she hadn’t made it back to her herd, it was enough for the mare just to see her filly alive and free.  It had been more than challenging for Meira to live on her own, wandering the land of the East Island pregnant with her first and only foal.  Fortunately, the deadly city cougars that had been the Olde herd’s primary predator didn’t seem to inhabit the Eastern Island, at least not as regularly as near the city; however, the grass beasts proved to be a constant threat, keeping the already exhausted mare always on her feet.  But no matter what the circumstance, Meira survived.  She had to for Akira.  Akira was born thin, though healthy and not nearly as scrawny as the foal that had died back in the Bachelor herd.  Though it certainly was very lonely for the young filly to grow up without siblings or other foals of a herd, because it was just her and her mother, an unbreakable bond was woven between them.  When Akira was old enough to begin traveling, Meira set out North with her daughter in search of the land bridge that would lead them back to the Olde herd.  During this journey, Meira did her best to begin teaching Akira whatever skills she knew to stay alive in the wilderness.  But most important of all, Akira was taught NEVER to go near the Bachelor herd and to stay out of their clutches at all costs…though this was all Meira would tell her at first, knowing she wasn’t ready to handle the gravity of her past.  So for many years, all Akira really knew is that they were traveling to the special land bridge that only could be crossed very few times a year, and on the other side of the water was a herd that would love and protect them.  On the other side of the water was home.

Juvenile (13-17 Years)

When Akira reached the teenage years, her mother began bringing out her daughter’s best assets: her abilites to run and to jump.  Akira was definitely not the strongest of fillies, but her thin, streamline frame, inherited from her dam, gave her an edge in agility while her long legs provided the lift she needed for high jumps.  Day after day, Meira would build up Akira’s endurance and sprinting ability with daily runs over the Eastern plains.  This was what Akira loved most, the freedom to gallop through lush valleys and sweet-scented meadows.  They would also visit the thick forests to heighten Akira’s already natural jumping ability, though at first it took many tumbles and frustrated squeals.  When Akira grew old enough, Meira cleared the mystery of what had happened to her so many years ago…how Akira came to be.  After this realization was when the fear and anger towards the Bachelors was seeded in her heart, from there growing into terror and hatred.  Akira struggled with the most that her father, who she’d never known, had been a Bachelor, and she still battles with such mixed feelings to this day.  Her wariness of stallions definitely stems from her lack of relationship with her unknown sire.  Though through all of this, Meira was there for her daughter, ready with a warm embrace and a shoulder to cry on.  Oddly enough, the anger Akira felt in her heart towards the bachelors overrode her fear and she was often caught by her mother sneaking close to the herd and meddling in their business only just enough not to get caught.  In fact, by the time she was fifteen, she’d been dubbed a name by the bachelor brutes, the Buckskin Bandit, and had been responsible for many escapes of their brood mares.  One such time, a dark and stormy night, she helped a young mare in particular leave the herd.  A champagne filly named Aralynne.  In fact, she had tried to help both Aralynne and her younger sister Perlita escape, but to their dismay, Perlita was lost in the chaos.  Meira, after severely scolding her own filly for such rash actions, immediately adopted the heartbroken mare as her own, giving Akira what she always wanted: a sister.  Together they wandered the Eastern lands, hoping to one day rejoin the Olde Herd.  Akira, however, didn’t realize how precious this time with her mother had been until it was savagely cut short…  The stress and fatigue of everything that had happened had slowly been tearing Meira apart physically, and she fell ill to colic.  By this time, Akira had just about reached sixteen.  She did all she could to take care of her ailing mother, but the illness eventually claimed the only family Akira ever knew...  To have the only solid figure in her life torn away shattered Akira’s heart, but her dam had risked her life to make sure Akira had been born free.  Akira would honor her mother’s valiant efforts.  She would live on as Meira wanted.  Her dam would always be a part of her; nothing would change that.  Burying her mother beneath the cool shade of a willow tree, Akira wept her goodbyes and set out with Aralynne on their own, never looking back.

Current Status (Young Mare, 18 Years)

It has been two years since her mother’s death, and yet Akira still inhabits the East Island.  From the beginning, doubt had crept into her mind if the Olde herd would accept her.  And now, she has nothing left, not even her mother’s rare silver dapple coloring, to prove who she was.  The fear of rejection haunted her mind and terrorized her dreams at night.  So when she and Aralynne finally reached the Island of Olde, Akira balked.  Thus, while Aralynne joined the protection of the herd, Akira would not follow her.  Distraught and heartbroken, Akira ran.  She has not seen her beloved adopted sister since.  Currently, she sees it fit to simply travel across the Eastern Isle at a leisurely pace, deciding to make all the islands her home.  Deep down inside, she can’t bear the thought of making connections only to have them ripped away, so she takes comfort and pride in being free.  Free to go where she wished and do what she pleased, keeping care to avoid the Bachelor guards who make constant roundups on their island as well as the predators that lurk in the forests.  Will she eventually succeed in fulfilling her mother’s wishes and join the Olde Herd?  Will she fall victim to the Bachelor herd as her mother and grandmother had before her?  Or will she carve out an entirely different path on her own?  Well, I suppose that’s for us to find out.

Role Play Sample

“Atop the plush, violet twin sized bed lay a crumpled mess of black hair, tangled sheets, and tired limbs as sunlight penetrated through the slit of the room-darkening shades covering Jenny's bedroom window. The pestering light glinting on Jenny's closed eyelids, causing the sleepy seventeen year old teenage girl to moan softly and shove her head beneath her pillow, attempting to block out the golden rays. *BEEP BEEP BEEP* A loud, exasperated groan escaped the girl's lips and a limb slid out from beneath the blankets, knocking over several items on her nightstand before her fist finally made contact with the snooze button. Sighing in relief, Jennifer snuggled back into the warmth of her bed, beginning to drift back into peaceful unconsciousness.

However, the next sensation she felt definitely wasn't the warm sun on her face. Suddenly Devin's frantic voice shattered her attempt to fall back asleep, yelling some nonsense about...about....what was he saying? As soon as she felt the rubbery, scaly sensation across her feet, though, she didn't have to ask. Devin's cries about a snake being in her bed finally registered; Jennifer screamed and jerked to attention, getting caught up in her comforter, not being able to keep her balance, and finally plummeting the three foot drop off of her bed to the floor with a loud thump. It took her about a minute, but finally she broke free from the sheets' tight grip and pressed her back against the wall, panting heavily as her purplish blue eyes scanned the floor for anything reptilian.

It was then that Devin's laughter rung in her ears and Jenny looked over to him only to see her eighteen year old brother doubled over, so hysterical he was having trouble breathing. She could feel her face grow hot with anger and her nimble fingers curled into tight balls. "DEVIN!!" Leaping to her feet, she took off in a mad frenzy towards her brother, ready to take him down. Only at the last second did he jump out of the way, leaving Jenny stumbling for a second before turning on her heel and charging for him again. This time, she caught up with him and pounded her fists against his shoulder, pushing him towards the door. "Out out OUT!!" she demanded, grunting and heaving as she attempted to remove him from the premises. Finally heaving and gasping for air, she kicked him out of her room, chucking a pillow at his face for emphasis before slamming the door.”
